Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not being considered for publication by another journal; otherwise, this must be justified in "Comments to the editor".
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format.
  • URLs for the references have been provided where possible.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics instead of underlining (except in URL addresses); figures and tables are inserted within the text, not at the end of the document as attachments.
  • The text follows the style guidelines and bibliographic requirements described in the Author Guidelines, on the About the Journal page.

Publication standards for the Acta Biológica Catarinense journal

Types of manuscripts

The following types of manuscripts are accepted for publication:

• Original research article;

• Scientific note;

• Review article.

Original Research Article – The text should have a maximum of 8,000 words (excluding abstract, list of references, and tables). The article must contain the following sections: title in Portuguese, title in English, abstract in Portuguese (200 words), abstract (200 words), keywords in Portuguese, keywords, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments, and references. The results and discussion sections may be included together or separately in the article.

Scientific Note – The text, a short research article, should have up to 4,000 words reporting interesting and significant new findings. Scientific notes include up to 2 figures and tables, combined. Manuscripts and their abstracts should be organized as described for original research articles.

Review Articles – May be published by invitation of the journal's Editorial Board. Reviews may be up to 6,000 words (excluding figures, tables, and reference list) and must include a title in Portuguese, a title in English, an abstract in Portuguese (200 words), keywords in Portuguese, an abstract (200 words), and keywords. Review articles should be written in essay format, with subheadings of the topics covered, and contain up to two figures. Maximum of 80 references, focusing on more recent works.

Articles that are purely descriptive and exploratory in nature will not be accepted.

Articles based solely on searches in platforms and databases will not be accepted.

Submitted articles must fall within the scope of the journal.

General guidelines for manuscript writing

The manuscript will have the following structure:"

a) Title (bold, centered, size 14, lowercase): concise and objective.

b) Subtitles: centered, unnumbered, uppercase, bold, size 12.

c) Abstract and summary should contain up to 200 words, in a single paragraph, without citations and references, size 10."

d) Keywords and keywords, up to five, in alphabetical order, separated by commas, added to the end of the abstract and summary, different from those contained in the title of the work, size 10.

e) For formatting, use A4 format, 2.0 cm on all margins, 1.5 line spacing in the text, Arial 12 font. Abstract, summary, keywords, keywords, acknowledgments, and references should be typed in Arial 10 font and with single spacing.

f) The texts should be written in the third person, in an impersonal style."

g) Tables and figures should have captions in size 12 and be inserted into the manuscript, preferably immediately after their citation in the text and in ascending numerical order of appearance. Tables should be constructed according to the model provided in published issues of ABC.

h) Figures (drawings, diagrams, photos, graphs, illustrations, maps, or plates) should have a maximum size of 16x23 cm, including the caption, and scales of magnitude or other indications, if necessary, presented in the figure itself or associated with the caption. The text in the figures should be in Arial font. Figures should not contain borders or external lines. Graphs should have titles on their axes, in Arial font, and a white background.

i) Figures should be digitized, preferably in color, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, and saved in JPEG format. These, in addition to appearing in the manuscript text, should be submitted in separate files as supplementary documents."

j) Units of measurement must conform to the International System of Units (SI).

k) In articles containing species names, these should be in italics, with the genus capitalized and the species name lowercase. The scientific name must comply with international nomenclature codes. Names of zoological species should be written with the author's name and publication date (author and date without emphasis) the first time they are mentioned in the text. Names of botanical species should be written with the author's name and respective family. The rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) and the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) must be observed.

l) Textbooks and educational publications will not be accepted as references."

m) Conference abstracts will not be accepted as references.

n) Citations in the text should be as follows:

– One author – last name and year: Evert (2016) or (EVERT, 2016);

– Two authors: Andreacci & Melo Júnior (2021) or (ANDREACCI & MELO JÚNIOR, 2021);

– Three or more authors: last name of the first author followed by et al.: Rossatto et al. (2019) or (ROSSATTO et al., 2019);

– More than one citation presented in the text in sequence – adopt chronological order: (EVERT, 2017; ROSSATTO et al., 2018; ANDREACCI & MELO JÚNIOR, 2022).

(o) References should be arranged in alphabetical order of citation names, with the full surname of all authors, abbreviated first names, journals with their full title and without the place of publication, with the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) ​​(if available), as follows:

p) At least 70% of the references must be dated within the last 10 years.

q) The number of references should not exceed 25.

r)A statement from the English reviewer/translator should be included.

• Statement from the English language reviewer/translator;

• Copyright assignment letter, confirming authorship and agreeing to the submitted text, signed by all authors.
